How to Unblur an Image

By UnblurPhoto · Updated

Make a blurry photo look clearer with free local enhancement, or choose paid Cloud processing for target-size output. This guide explains which option to try, how to check the result, and when blur cannot realistically be fixed.

Start with Free Local Enhancement

No account, photo upload or Cloud credits required for local processing.

Checking local processing support…

The short answer

Open the photo tool, choose your image and start with Free · Local. Try general enhancement for an overall soft image, or Portrait when a face is the main subject. Compare the original and result before downloading.

If you need a specific output size or want to process several photos together, switch to Cloud. Review the planned dimensions and credit cost before starting.

Set realistic expectations: AI can make a photo look sharper, but it cannot guarantee recovery of the original detail. A sharper-looking result is not necessarily a more accurate one.

Step 1: Start with the best available original image

Use the original camera file or the least-compressed copy you have. If possible, avoid screenshots of existing photos and copies that have been repeatedly shared or saved.

A larger file is not automatically a better source, but an original may retain detail that a compressed copy has lost. Enhancement cannot reliably reconstruct information that is no longer present.

Keep an untouched copy so you can compare results without replacing your original.

Step 2: Try free local image enhancement

Choose Free · Local in the tool.

Local enhancement runs on your device. It requires no account, does not upload your photo, and adds no watermark. There is no daily processing quota or Cloud credit charge.

Model files download when needed. Processing speed and supported image sizes depend on your device and available memory.

Local enhancement offers Fast 2×, HD 2× and Advanced. In Advanced, choose 1×, 2× or 4× for general enhancement, or use Portrait at the original size (1×).

General enhancement: 1×, 2× or 4×

Fast 2× starts automatically after you choose a photo unless a smaller working size requires confirmation. HD 2× and Advanced require you to start processing manually.

Use general enhancement for a photo that looks soft, low-resolution or compressed. Start with the default local option, then compare another available mode if needed.

To choose a multiplier yourself, select Advanced, then choose 1×, 2× or 4× under Output scale. Leave Portrait enhancement off for general enhancement. Review the dimensions, then click Enhance for the selected mode; the button asks you to confirm the download if model files are needed.

Check the dimensions displayed by the tool:

  • Original size: the dimensions of the photo you selected.
  • Working size: the dimensions used for processing, which may be smaller because of device limits.
  • Output size: the dimensions of the result you will receive.

The local multiplier applies to the working image. Selecting 4× does not necessarily mean four times the original dimensions, and it does not guarantee four times the detail.

Choose the mode based on the result you need—not just the largest multiplier.

Portrait: enhancement at the original size

Choose Portrait when a face is the main subject.

Select Advanced, then turn on Portrait enhancement (original size, 1×). This selects 1× automatically; 2× and 4× remain visible but unavailable while Portrait is on. Turn Portrait off to use those multipliers for general enhancement. Click Enhance portrait 1×, or Confirm download & enhance portrait 1× if model files need downloading.

For other portrait output sizes, choose View Cloud face enhancement to open the paid Cloud options: 1K, 2K or 4K. These are output sizes, not 2× or 4× multipliers. Opening these options does not upload your photo or use credits. Review the size and credit quote, then start Cloud processing to upload the original.

Local Portrait works at the original dimensions, 1×. It is not a face-upscaling mode.

Compare eyes, teeth, skin texture and facial shape carefully. If the result changes the person’s appearance, keep the original or try another option rather than accepting a sharper but less faithful face.

Step 3: Choose Cloud if you need a target size or a batch

Cloud is an optional paid route offering clear enhancement, face enhancement and motion deblur.

Choose the option that matches your image. No mode can guarantee recovery from severe blur.

Unlike local processing, starting a Cloud job uploads your original photo. Review the privacy policy before submitting sensitive images.

Choose 1K, 2K or 4K

Cloud sizes describe the output’s long edge, not a zoom multiplier:

  • 1K: 1,024px long edge — 1 credit per photo
  • 2K: 2,048px long edge — 2 credits per photo
  • 4K: 4,096px long edge — 3 credits per photo

The same credit rates apply to all three Cloud options.

Your photo’s aspect ratio is preserved. If the original is larger than the size you select, the result is reduced to that size.

For example, choosing 2K for a photo with a long edge above 2,048px makes the output smaller. Choosing 4K also does not preserve the original dimensions of a photo whose long edge exceeds 4,096px.

Check the planned width and height before starting. A larger size setting is not a promise of more accurate detail.

Check which sizes your photo supports

The default is 2K when available, otherwise 1K. Available sizes depend on the original dimensions, aspect ratio and processing limits.

For small or unusually shaped photos:

  • Images with a long edge below 256px are not eligible for paid Cloud processing.
  • A target long edge cannot exceed four times the original long edge.
  • The planned output’s short edge must be at least 256px.
  • Unsupported sizes are disabled before submission.

If the target long edge exceeds twice the original long edge, the tool warns that detail is limited by the source.

These limits prevent selling an unsupported size. They do not guarantee that every available size will look equally good.

Review the quote before you run

Before starting, check:

  • The selected Cloud option.
  • The planned output dimensions.
  • The credit cost for the photo or batch.

Only successfully delivered results consume credits. If an item fails, its reserved credits are released.

Processing several photos

Cloud supports batches of up to 15 photos, with a combined file size of 200MB or less. Both limits apply.

Your available credits must cover the entire batch quote before submission. ZIP downloads cost no extra credits.

Cloud credit packs start at $4.99. All paid plans include the same Cloud features; prices, credit allowances and expiry terms differ.

Step 4: Compare the enhanced image before downloading

Compare the original and enhanced image at the same viewing scale. Do not judge only by a small preview, where blur and artifacts can be harder to notice.

Look for improvements such as more natural edges or better-defined features. Also check for problems:

  • Bright or dark halos around edges.
  • Repeated or unnatural textures.
  • Changed facial features.
  • Invented letters or numbers.
  • An overly smooth, painted appearance.

If the result introduces distracting artifacts, try another available option or keep the original. The most aggressively enhanced version is not always the best one.

Download Cloud results within 24 hours of completion. Save a copy to your device rather than treating the result link as permanent storage.

What kind of image blur can be improved?

Different problems need different expectations. “Blurry” can describe slight softness, compression, low resolution, motion or missed focus.

Slight softness

A mildly soft photo may look better after sharpening or enhancement. Start with local processing and check that fine edges remain natural.

Avoid judging success only by how strong the edges look. Excessive sharpening can make a photo look harsher without recovering meaningful detail.

Low-resolution or compressed images

A small or repeatedly shared photo may have blocky edges, rough outlines or missing texture.

Enhancement may improve its appearance, but increasing the number of pixels does not guarantee recovery of the original detail. Always inspect the result rather than relying on output dimensions alone.

Motion blur or missed focus

Camera shake, subject movement and missed focus can remove substantial information.

Cloud motion deblur is an option for motion-related blur, but severe cases may remain blurry or develop artificial detail. If you can retake the photo, that is usually more reliable than trying to reconstruct missing information.

Faces and text

AI may estimate plausible facial features or lettering instead of recovering the originals.

Do not treat enhanced faces, documents, numbers or text as verified evidence. Keep the original and verify important information from another source.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unblur an image for free?

Yes. Free · Local offers general enhancement at 1×, 2× and 4×, plus Portrait at the original size.

It requires no account or Cloud credits and adds no watermark. Device and memory limits still apply. Cloud processing is paid separately.

Will my photo be uploaded?

Not during local processing.

Starting a Cloud job uploads your original for processing. Choose Local if you want your photo to stay on your device. See the privacy policy for more information.

Can I make a completely blurry photo clear?

Not reliably. If important detail was never captured or has been lost, AI may generate a plausible replacement rather than recover what was actually there.

Results depend on the source image. Compare the result with the original and be cautious when accuracy matters.

Does 4× mean the same thing as 4K?

No.

Local 4× multiplies the working image’s dimensions. Cloud 4K targets an output long edge of 4,096px.

Check the displayed output dimensions rather than assuming the labels are interchangeable.

Can I improve a blurry photo without AI?

Ordinary sharpening can improve the appearance of mild softness. It cannot reliably restore missing detail, and aggressive sharpening can create halos or emphasize noise.

Start with small adjustments and compare the result with the original.

Why does local processing take time on the first run?

The model and runtime download when needed. Cached files may be reused later, but your browser can remove them.

Processing speed also depends on your device, the selected mode and the photo’s working dimensions.
